The Wizard of the Waves

Planted January 19, 2003

Location: Marconi Station Site, South Wellfleet, MA

Difficulty: Easy

Planted by Deanne Bellefeuille-Besnia, the lazy letterboxer and David Besnia, WR1T

Take Route 6 to South Wellfleet and turn at the sign indicating the Marconi Station Site and Marconi Beach. Follow the signs to the Station Site. Park in the lot and look for the sign indicating the Atlantic White Cedar Swamp Trail. Enter the trail and instead of going left toward the swamp trail stay on the right and walk along Old Wireless Road. Occasionally you will see markers identifying tree species on the left and right. When you come to the bench on the right side of the road stop, and look for the marker identifying "Bear Oak" ahead on the left. Stand on the road between the bench and the marker and look into the woods on the right for the perfect tree to hide a letterbox under. Walk about 20 steps off the road to that tree and find the Wizard of the Waves Letterbox honoring Guglielmo Marconi nestled underneath. This box was planted on the weekend commemorating the 100th anniversary of Marconi’s first transatlantic radio transmission. The first finder who contacts us will receive a US Post Office cancellation of this event.
